Southland Barrel Vaults
Challenge
Centre management were undertaking a multi-stage revamp of the shopping centre. This stage concerned the replacement of feature skylights, and presented two significant challenges. The first was to ensure the safety of customers during the build. The second, which proved to be the most significant, was the location of the shopping centre around and over a busy arterial road. This presented major difficulties for positioning a crane to lift the barrel vaults into place. Watch the build here.
Build
Rodine’s innovative solution for moving the barrel vaults into place was to use a heavy-lift helicopter. The use of an aerial crane proved to be a significant cost-saving over a conventional crane, which would also have remained on location for several months. This innovation was made possible due to Rodine re-engineering the barrel vaults to make aerial crane lifting feasible. In addition, Rodine only had a two-hour window with roads to be closed and flight path cleared in which to use the aerial crane. Therefore, the operation required careful planning over several months. Watch the build here.
Innovation
Walking beneath the skylights today, most customers are unlikely to appreciate the technical challenge their installation presented. However, the solution Rodine introduced involved substantial cost savings for the client, and is a great example of Rodine’s value.
